Christie's Celebrates New Hong Kong Headquarters with Inaugural Art Sales
Christie's marks the opening of its new Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong with a 3-month program of sales, exhibitions, and events.
Christie's, the world-renowned auction house, is marking the opening of its new Asia Pacific headquarters in Hong Kong with a three-month program of sales, exhibitions, and events.
The program kicks off with the "20th and 21st Century Art Sales" on September 26th and 27th, 2024. This inaugural auction at The Henderson, a new landmark designed by Zaha Hadid Architects, will feature a diverse selection of artworks by internationally acclaimed artists, including prominent Thai artists.
Global Masterpieces
The sales highlight rare pieces by renowned artists such as Vincent van Gogh's "Les canots amarrés" (1887), unseen publicly for three decades, and Claude Monet's "Nymphéas" (1897-1899), a legendary Water Lilies painting offered for the first time at auction.
Zao Wou-Ki's historically significant "05.06.80 – Triptyque" (1980) and Kim Whan-ki's "9-XII-71 #216" (1971), a celebrated Blue Pointillist work, will also be offered for the first time.
Thai Art on the Global Stage
The auction also showcases masterpieces by leading Thai artists, reflecting the international recognition of their talent. Pieces include:
- Thawan Duchanee's "Untitled" (1966): A previously unseen oil on canvas from the late national artist's Parisian period.
- Pratuang Emjaroen's "Universe" (1972): An oil on canvas by a highly respected Thai master.
- Tang Chang's "Untitled" (1963): A debut auction for this pioneer of Thai abstraction, featuring an epoxy marine paint on canvas work.
- Damrong Wong-Uparaj's "Shore Scene with Boats, Rocks and Scaffold-Like Poles" (1961) and "Buddha" (1967): Works by one of Thailand's most influential artists, appearing in the Evening Sales for the first time.
- Natee Utarit's "The Yellow MET" (2017): An impressive oil on canvas by a renowned Thai contemporary artist.
International Recognition for Thai Art
Prapavadee Sophonpanich, Managing Director of Christie's (CLMVT), commented on the significance of featuring Thai art in the inaugural sale:
