Celebrated British artist turns street food menus into art at The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon

As part of its anything but standard cultural programming, The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon is pleased to present the Bangkok debut of highly acclaimed British artist Lucy Sparrow. Opening to the public on 5 April 2023 and running until 5 May 2023, the ‘Add to Cart’ exhibition will transform the hotel’s lobby, The Parlor and Tease into a bustling street food market with every snack on display crafted entirely from felt. For the brand’s latest collaboration with the artist, The Standard takes a deep dive into traditional Thai flavors that evoke nostalgia by recreating fond childhood memories through street food’s association with good, simple times. Taking a trip down memory lane, the public will find food carts overflowing with every Thai street food staple imaginable – from moo-ping (grilled BBQ pork) and Isaan pork sausages to kanom krok (coconut rice pancake) and cotton candy and tropical fruits cart – all hand-stitched in the inimitable Lucy Sparrow style.

Taking over months to research, create and install, Lucy Sparrow says of her latest project; The Standard has been such a supportive partner in my career and has shared some incredibly memorable moments with me over the last seven years. They gave me the platform for my first US show, ‘8 till Late’ in New York in 2017 and then allowed me to share the felt with the west coast when I opened Sparrow Mart in downtown Los Angeles in 2018. I’m delighted to be back among friends as they open their incredible Bangkok hotel and can’t wait to see my work installed there.

Lucy Sparrow is one of the most exciting and original artists working in the UK today. She took the art world by storm in Summer 2014 with the opening of her fully-stocked felt Cornershop installation in London’s East End. With queues around the block and wall to wall media coverage, it was both a commercial and critical success. In 2016, the BBC commissioned Lucy to recreate the Crown Jewels in felt, to celebrate HRH The Queen’s official 90th birthday.

The exhibition will be opened to the public until 5 May at The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon at Relay Lobby, The Parlor and Tease.
