The first Meguru Yamaguchi’s art exhibition in Bangkok, where colors collide, and boundaries subside

Maison JE will showcase OUT OF BOUNDS Exhibition in April. This exhibition pays homage to the work of Meguru Yamaguchi, an influential artist from Brooklyn, New York.

Step into the realm of contemporary Japanese artist Meguru Yamaguchi, whose one-of-a-kind artworks are his claim to fame. "In this exhibition, the elements and exclusive artwork have been meticulously created. The artist deeply desires to use this exhibition as a vehicle for the expression of his artistic spirit." Elsie Lu, the founder of Maison JE and a passionate collector, expressed her joy with sparkling eyes upon witnessing the work of her favorite artist on display.

Yamaguchi is well-known not only in the art panorama but also in the street fashion world, thanks to his collaborations with world-renowned labels such as Issey Miyake Men, Uniqlo, Levi's, Oakley, and FENDI Foundation collections, among others. His designs were also featured on the outfits of Japan national table tennis players in 2024. Yamaguchi's spirit fills every square inch of the “OUT OF BOUNDS” exhibition at Maison JE Bangkok, which includes his exclusive collections of clothes, bags, and accessory designs for his debut Maison JE exhibition in Thailand and East Asia.

In the Elements of Meguru Yamaguchi

The "OUT OF BOUNDS" exhibition by Meguru Yamaguchi at Maison JE Bangkok offers subtleties that allow art enthusiasts to meaningfully absorb the soul of Yamaguchi's art. Meguru Yamaguchi was born in Shibuya, Tokyo in Japan, and brought up in a fashion designer family. Later in 2007, Yamaguchi relocated to Brooklyn, New York in the United States and has remained there ever since.

Yamaguchi's reputation as a “Digital Impressionist” comes from his ability to create abstract art that is both sophisticated and vibrant. He invented "Cut & Paste," a method for making art with a technique where he mixes colors on plastic sheets before cutting, peeling, and placing them on various surfaces. It's like skipping across several surfaces with a brush.

Elsie Lu explained that 'Blue,' one of Yamaguchi's favorite colors, represents the sky, the ocean, and the planet. It frequently appears in his paintings, alongside black and white.

Blended with abstract art, Yamaguchi's artwork draws inspiration from ancient Japanese calligraphy. In addition to being abstract, Yamaguchi enjoys bringing out the highlights of cultures, cities, and people by creating artworks using multiple techniques. Yamaguchi is especially interested in the dynamic use of colors and overlapping materials, which gives a completely different feeling to each art piece.

Yamaguchi's design breaks assumptions, conventions, restrictions and transcending stereotypes, exhibiting an unfettered ability to create work. This is due to his belief in exploring limitless possibilities. He is passionate about incorporating diverse cultures into art, and he highly values collectors and galleries interested in exhibiting his work.

"Bringing Yamaguchi's art to Maison JE wasn't easy. My brother and I are a huge fan and collector of his art. We finally made it to his first show in Thailand after a few years of waiting. It is therefore a moment of great pride and happiness for me that Thai people and tourists will be able to admire his work up close and immerse themselves in Yamaguchi's rare art." As she discusses the work of one of her favorite artists, Elsie Lu smiles brightly.

The first Yamaguchi’s art exhibition in Bangkok, Thailand

A passion for art led to the creation of Maison JE, a new prominent art space in Bangkok's Bang Rak district. The meticulous design of the "OUT OF BOUNDS" exhibition places the exhibition zones on the 1st and 2nd floors for a 360-degree view, providing art enthusiasts with ample time to fully appreciate the artwork. Among the colorful sculptures, there is a harmonizing rhythm and aroma that symbolize Yamaguchi's complexity. We will notice patterns and colors that have a strange pull deep down. It exuded a charm that only Yamaguchi could pull off.

The "OUT OF BOUNDS" exhibition presents a technique Yamaguchi calls "cut and paste," inspired by street culture he has known since childhood, and a palette of diversely vibrant colors. The most recent additions to the collection highlight Yamaguchi's distinctive, dynamic, yet beautifully crafted works.

"I enjoy all of Yamaguchi's works. When I last saw his art in Taiwan, I was very impressed. I love the energy that emanates from his work. All of the colors and elements appeared to pop out of the white walls. So, when he agreed to display his collections at Maison JE, I was overjoyed. He is a talented artist, and his floating art have incredible gravitas. I want everyone to experience it for themselves." Elsie Lu concluded.

Meet the first exhibition in Thailand “Meguru Yamaguchi Collection Exhibition” at Maison JE Bangkok between 19 April and 02 June 2024, every day (closed Mondays) from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.  Free admission is available.
