Canada Showcases Sustainable Food at Taste of Canada 2024
A collaboration between the Canadian Embassy and Gourmet Market Thailand brings a taste of Canada to Bangkok. The "Taste of Canada 2024" event highlights premium, sustainably produced food and ingredients from various regions across Canada. From July 24th to August 5th, Gourmet Market at The EmQuartier, The Emporium, EmSphere, and Paragon Department Store will host the festival, showcasing a selection of Canadian products for the first time in Thailand.
For this year, premium local products were selected to reflect Canada’s sustainability for Thai and international customers to appreciate, with some food products available for the first time in Thailand at this festival: fresh wild Canadian sockeye salmon, Vancouver oysters, golden roasted flax, Quantu dark chocolate bar which has received awards for five years for using single-origin beans, and Snow Farms dried cranberries that are naturally sweet from a meticulous growing process and free from preservatives and additives.
Mr. Sanjeev Chowdhury, Counsellor (Commercial), Embassy of Canada to Thailand, said of Canadian food culture: “Canada is one of the largest produce exporters in the world, and we are focused on continuously developing products and production processes. The Canadian food and farm industries are known globally for hygiene, quality, freshness, safety, and being from nature, thus the inspiration for this year’s ‘sustainability is in our nature’ concept.”
Canada’s unique food culture reflects its diverse population, resulting in a blend of cultures, exciting flavors, and ingredients that showcase Canada’s vast terrains and geography. As the second-largest country by landmass, Canada is rich in natural resources, and this food festival is held to share Canada’s exquisite local flavors with Thai and international customers.
Shoppers can enjoy the following checklist of nine best Canadian imports at “Taste of Canada 2024”:
- Wild-caught Sockeye Salmon: From Fraser River, the longest river in British Columbia, which connects to the Pacific Ocean. During hatching season, the sockeye salmon have deep red flesh. Young salmon stay in freshwater for a while before migrating to the ocean, then return to lay eggs when they’re older. Due to the long migration distance, their flesh is dense, intense, and packed with omega-3, suitable for grilling.
- Vancouver Oysters: Beyond sockeye salmon, British Columbia, situated on the west coast of Canada, boasts many fresh seafood from nature, including a variety of fresh oysters. Vancouver Oysters are known for being clean, sweet, and briny.
- Premium-grade Red Cherries: About 95% of cherries in Canada are grown in British Columbia. Okanagan and Kootenay valleys are important growing locations due to the suitable climate: long winters and sunny days. As a result, the cherries are large, plump, dense, crunchy, and sweet.
- New! Snow Farm Dried Cranberries: Grown on a farm surrounded by snowcapped mountains with water from the Fraser River. Rich with natural resources such as pure water and soil, Snow Farm’s berries are high quality without any additives. The gentle drying process aids in preserving all nutrients. Snow Farm Dried Cranberries are available for the first time in Thailand at Taste of Canada 2024.
- Canmar Golden Roasted Flax: With Canada being the leading flax exporter in the world, Canmar selects the best quality flax for roasting until they are crunchy and have a well-balanced taste. They can be consumed on their own or added to other dishes for added nutrients, as they are rich in omega-3 and both soluble and insoluble fiber. The recommended serving is 2-4 tablespoons daily.
- Qantu Dark Chocolate: Available in a variety of flavors. Qantu is a popular Canadian chocolate brand that uses single-origin beans to maintain cacao varieties. Other ingredients are added to create the ultimate chocolate experience for chocolate lovers. Chuncho 100% dark chocolate is made from cacao beans grown on trees that are older than 60 years in the Ayacucho region of Peru. Oat Milq 50% dark chocolate is mild from a blend of organic ingredients including cacao, pure maple syrup, gluten-free oats, and cacao butter.
- Turkey Hill Pure Maple Syrup: Maple syrup is synonymous with Canada. Other than being sweet, Canadian maple syrup is rich in calcium, potassium, magnesium, and iron. Turkey Hill is one of the best-known maple syrup brands with over 150 years of experience and a variety of grades available from various shades of gold to amber. The syrup is bottled in a beautiful, durable glass jar.
- Dm Berg Iceberg Pure Water: Originates from glaciers aged 10,000-15,000 years. The snow density created an impenetrable wall of ice that even seawater cannot enter. The pure water is free from minerals, bottled in a stringent process to maintain pure, superior quality.
- Timbits from Tim Hortons: Popular beloved Canadian donut brand Tim Hortons successfully launched in Thailand with signature donut hole Timbits. There are Timbits at special prices, along with more than ten donuts and refreshing beverages.
