Dusit Thani Bangkok Unveils Living Art: Rare Mural Restoration Marks Centennial of Thai Master
Witness the rebirth of a 1970s masterpiece as artists restore iconic lobby murals in a celebration of Thai heritage
In a captivating blend of heritage and artistry, Dusit Thani Bangkok is transforming its grand lobby into a living exhibition. From March 8th to 21st, 2025, guests will have the extraordinary opportunity to witness the restoration of its iconic murals, created by the revered Thai artist Paiboon Suwannakudt, also known as Tan Kudt. This event, commemorating the artist's centennial birthday, is a rare glimpse into the meticulous preservation of a near six-decade-old masterpiece.
Dusit Thani Bangok, a beacon of Thai elegance since its reopening, displays two monumental columns adorned with Tan Kudt mesmerizing 1970s murals. Traditionally, such artistic feats are reserved for temples, making their presence in a luxury hotel a truly exceptional cultural treasure. Now, under the guidance of the artist's daughters, Phaptawan and Kapkaew, both accomplished artists themselves, these historic works will be brought back to their former glory.

The restoration process is a delicate dance of precision and reverence. Initially, observers can witness the meticulous sanding and re-outlining of traditional Thai motifs, a crucial step requiring the creation of precise stencils from the original designs. Following this, the artists will breathe new life into the murals with the originally vibrant colors, employing time-honored techniques to ensure the original hues are faithfully preserved. Every stroke, every detail, will honor the artist's enduring legacy.

Adding an unexpected layer to the restoration, Kapkaew revealed to HappeningBKK at the site, "During our work, we accidentally discovered the original patterns created by my father (Tan Kudt) beneath the present surface. This fortunate discovery allows us to bring back the original mural pattern. Consequently, the work may be slightly delayed from our initial schedule. Another challenge we face is blending the colors to closely match the original hues. Many color suppliers have altered their production methods, requiring us to meticulously blend the paints."

Beyond the visual spectacle, Dusit Thani Bangkok is offering a culinary journey that complements the artistic experience. The hotel's culinary team has crafted a special Thai Afternoon Tea, a gastronomic tribute to Paiboon Suwannakudt. This curated set of 14 traditional savories and sweets reflects the rich tapestry of Thai culinary heritage and the artist’s personal connections. Guests can savor delicacies like "Mieng Kham," a traditional bite-sized treat, and "Mung Korn Khab Kaew," a reimagined summer snack, each dish telling a story of Thai culture and craftsmanship.

The afternoon tea, available until March 16, 2025, is more than just a meal; it's a sensory exploration, designed to deepen the connection between art and experience. From the elegant presentation of durian in coconut milk to the "Kra Ya Sart" designed to resemble the iconic mural columns, each element is thoughtfully crafted. The inclusion of tamarind-flavored chocolate and a reimagined mango sticky rice further highlights the personal connection to the artist, symbolizing family bonds and celebration.
Paiboon Suwannakudt, a graduate of Silpakorn University, left an indelible mark on Thai art. His works, including those in the Dusit Thani Bangkok, stand as testaments to his dedication to preserving and evolving traditional Thai artistic forms. These two five-ton weight mural columns are among the artworks left by the legendary artist. Previously, they were located inside the Thai restaurant "Benjarong" at the Dusit Thani Bangkok. This restoration, therefore, is not merely an act of preservation, but a celebration of a life dedicated to art and heritage.
In addition to hotel guests, the public is welcome to view this "Live Art Exhibition". The iconic columns is located at the hotel's lobby.
