Bhutan Film Institute announces inaugural International Film Festival
Bhutan International Film Fest, to be held from Sept 17-23, offering a platform for filmmakers to share their unique perspectives and stories with the world
Nestled in the majestic Himalayas, Bhutan prepares to unveil its cinematic treasures. The Bhutan Film Institute (BFI) proudly announces the inaugural Kingdom of Bhutan International Film Festival (KBIFF), set to take place from September 17 to 23, 2024. KBIFF will showcase a diverse selection of films with a special focus on stories from the Himalayas and the South Asian region, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and celebrating the power of cinema to inspire, educate, and entertain.
Bhutan's film industry, initiated in the 1990s with the pioneering tragic love story "Gasa Lamai Singye" directed by Ugyen India, has evolved from a Bollywood-inspired landscape to a unique cinematic voice blending ancient Buddhist wisdom with modern storytelling. With government support, local filmmakers are crafting films that reflect Bhutan's rich culture and spirituality, captivating audiences both at home and abroad, and positioning the Himalayan kingdom as a rising star in the global film scene.
