Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok Hosts 4th Annual Pride Film Festival
Back for the 4th consecutive year, Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok presents the Pride Film Festival to celebrate PRIDE Month in June
The Kimpton Maa-Lai Bangkok will host the 4th annual Pride Film Festival on Saturday, June 29th, 2024, to celebrate Pride Month. The one-day event features film screenings, panel discussions, and an after-party.
Film Screenings
The festival showcases five films that explore LGBTQIA+ themes, with screenings running from 10:30 am to 10:45 pm. All films are in English except for the Colombian and Thai films, which will have English subtitles. Admission is free with advance reservations required.
- "The Danish Girl" (2015): A biographical drama about one of the first recipients of gender reassignment surgery.
- "Of an Age" (2022): A coming-of-age story about a young man who develops feelings for his dance partner's brother. (Presented in collaboration with the Australian Embassy in Thailand)
- "Beginners" (2010): A drama about a father who comes out as gay to his son after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.
- "Miss Maria, Skirting the Mountain" (2017): A Colombian documentary about a transgender woman living in a conservative village. (Presented in collaboration with the Colombian Embassy in Thailand)
- "The Iron Ladies" (2000): A Thai comedy-drama based on the true story of a men's volleyball team comprised of gay and transgender players.
PRIDETalks
The festival will also feature two 30-minute panel discussions with influential LGBTQIA+ community members. The discussions aim to raise awareness, provide inspiration, and explore themes of representation and LGBTQIA+ struggles in media.
- A representative from GIRLxGIRL, a community for lesbians, will discuss issues relevant to the lesbian community (in Thai).
- Tana Sukke, a transgender comedian, will discuss the representation of LGBTQIA+ people in movies and transgender struggles in media (in English).
Bar.Yard After-Party
Following the film screenings, Bar.Yard rooftop bar will host a "PRIDE Party" featuring LGBTQIA+ DJs, drag performances, and dancing. The party starts at 4:00 pm and runs until late. Reservations are recommended.
