The travel bug has bitten Thais hard, with a whopping seven in ten planning to take multiple vacations this year, according to the inaugural American Express Travel, Dining, and Luxury Trends Research for Thailand. As the country emerges from the pandemic, residents are prioritizing exploration and new experiences.
A strong desire for adventure is driving travel plans, with 68% of respondents citing bucket list trips as their primary motivation. Short breaks are favored, with 55% opting for weekend getaways and 39% choosing week-long escapes. While domestic destinations like Chiang Mai and Phuket remain popular, Japan has emerged as the top international choice for Thai travelers.
Savvy Travelers and Spending Habits
Thai travelers are demonstrating a keen eye for deals, with 88% using travel hacks such as booking off-peak and taking advantage of credit card benefits. American Express is positioning itself as the ideal travel companion, offering exclusive perks and support to enhance the travel experience.
Millennials and Gen Z are leading the travel charge, averaging 4.1 trips per year and demonstrating a strong appetite for exploration. While dining out is a universal priority, younger generations are also allocating significant budgets for shopping and activities.
